RUTHERGLEN HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL DEBATE:“Is This the Best Time in History to be Alive?”The annual Rutherglen High School Debate was hosted again this year by the Rutherglen Rotary Club on Wednesday 19th June. The students of Yarrawonga Sacred Heart College were invited to take part in debating on the subject of “Is This the Best Time in History to be Alive?”Rutherglen High School principal, Phil Rogers, chaired the evening and announced that the Rutherglen team (pictured below) consisting of Kirsty Nixon (left), Cindy Fung and Sophie Smith on the right would debate in the affirmative. Yarrawonga Sacred Heart team from left - Marnie Lester-Smith, Lachlan Forrester & Emily CrosslandYarrawonga Sacred Heart students challenged in the negative and were supported by their teacher/coach Fleur Linehan and Anne McGeahanAdjudicating the debate where Pam Maden, a former teacher at Rutherglen High, Geoff Ronnfeldt from Wahgunyah and Maurice Coster from Yarrawonga Sacred Heart College.The debate was held in the Vine restaurant run by the Rutherglen High School hospitality students and Rotarians and guests, together with participating student families, were served an impressive two course dinner prior to the presentation.The students then proceeded to give lively debate about the best and worse of living in today’s society. Touching on the areas of war, peace, terrorism, human rights, gender equality, racial discrimination, democracy, health, lifestyle, global financial crisis, cost of war, technology and new forms of communication/social networking. Many facts and figures were offered in support of the data presented with both global and Australian scenarios being discussed.After much deliberation, and providing the teams with some constructive feedback on their performance, Maurice Coster announced Rutherglen High School as the winner, by a very close margin.A great night was had by all who attended.
